A home for Visionaries

Moroccan Madness
One of the most distinctive features of Rancho Las Canas is a partially completed structure we affectionately named Moroccan Madness, or simply MM.
When we purchased the property, the structure was already underway. Its bold architectural style immediately caught our attention. The design blends Moroccan and Gothic influences, with sculptural concrete arches and dramatic lines that make it unlike anything else in the area.
We believe the previous owner originally intended the building to become their home. After spending time on the land, however, we chose to place our own home at the highest point of the property, where the panoramic views and quiet surroundings felt especially compelling.
That left us with an intriguing question. What should Moroccan Madness become?
At first we imagined finishing it as a guest casita. Then we considered an art studio and gallery. The structure has a natural creative energy that lends itself to those kinds of spaces.
In the end, we were drawn to a different idea.
Instead of enclosing it as a residence, we chose to complete only the exterior structure and keep the interior open. This approach allows it to function as a shaded, open air gathering space that stays cool and breezy throughout the day.
It quickly became one of our favorite places on the property. During warm afternoons it offers a comfortable retreat from the sun. In the evenings it transforms into a welcoming place for friends, conversation, music, or small events.
Moroccan Madness sits on the lower third of the property, elevated enough above the road to provide privacy while still capturing beautiful breezes that flow across the land. A staircase also leads to the roof, where you can enjoy a sweeping 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside.
Another fascinating detail is the artist who originally built the structure. The concrete work was created by Steve Kornher, an internationally recognized sculptural concrete artist who lives nearby in Atotonilco. His work can be seen in projects around the world, and more information about his creations can be found at: www.flyingconcrete.com
Although Steve is now mostly retired, he still lives locally and remains available to consult if a future owner wishes to continue developing Moroccan Madness.
The structure is already visually striking and full of character. Whether it becomes a studio, event space, guest retreat, creative workshop, or something entirely different, Moroccan Madness invites imagination.
It is one more element that makes Rancho Las Canas a property with personality, history, and the freedom to shape it into something truly unique.
